Today You Turn Twenty-One
Today you turn twenty-one.
That's it. You're legal. I guess I'm done.
Happy birthday to you.
Happy birthday my son.
You were my second born and my last.
Oh my. You've grown up so fast.
From a small bundle cradled in my arms
to a young man with twinkling eyes and beguiling charms.
You were my collector of things:
rocks, shells, cards, and strings.
You caught Pokemon and wanted to be a Power Ranger.
You had tons of friends; you didn't know a stranger.
Baseball, football, wrestling, track.
You played sports from here to there and back.
You brought music and rhythm to my ears;
my in-house bass player for years and years.
Lucky me with a ring-side seat!
Cheering you on with each successful feat.
You were and are my sweet ginger lad.
So much love to give. What fun we've had!
Now in college with a pretty girl by your side.
In demand and on the move. I'm so full of pride!
Today you turn twenty-one.
That's it. You're legal. I guess I'm done.
No, no, not done. You will ALWAYS be my little one.
Happy birthday! Happy birthday to you, my son.
Today you turn twenty-one.
For my son's birthday: May 22, 2015.
How very precious! I know your son will treasure this. My baby's birthday is the 23rd; she'll be 49 ~ "Oh my! You've grown up so fast!"

ReplyDeleteoh i know it well - the baby in the family turning 21 - .i loved reading your recollection of him and his collections, ,etc. loved the poem. Happy birthday to such a "young" handsome guy. I love that u have a ginger. Congrats on your youngest being legal.

ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to him. He and them together in the the picture look great!
sweet poem and he looks like a fine young man. No matter what he shall return to the nest for wisdom (and a meal). Congrats on 21 for him, congrats to you for being his mother.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe it! I have watched both your sons grow up! Happy Birthday to him. His girlfriend is beautiful and they look so happy together. Your poem is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteOh My how beautiful is this. I know the feeling so well Daisy. They grow up to fast. Happy Birthday to your son.
ReplyDelete*Gasp!* My parents didn't write me a poem on my 21st! I'll see to that. (stalks off)
ReplyDeleteAw, that's sweet! Happy birthday to your son!
ReplyDeleteA poem to celebrate a son , and what a poem ! What a son !
ReplyDeleteWow , he's all grown up but you're "not done". There's so much more to life with him even if he's on his own . Moms are never done. They love, pray, and care for their sons (and daughters ) until the day they ( moms ) die. We can't help it ,can we ?
But what a fine son you've raised. Happy birthday to your son and to you.
What a great poem for his 21st birthday!
ReplyDeleteFantastic poem written by an adoring mother to her handsome son on his twenty first birthday.
ReplyDeleteHowever big he may grow the son will always be a son to the mother. Such wonderful times children have with their mothers.
The relationship mothers have with their children is very, very special and cannot be described in worlds.
Lovely poem written with great feelings in connection with your son's birthday.
Best wishes to you son on his birthday.
Happy Birthday to your son! You have much to be proud of. It must feel bittersweet. He'll always be your baby. I'm moved by the line, "Lucky me, with a ring-side seat."
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend, Daisy.
What a lovely poem! Happy Birthday to you son, and congratulations to you for letting him to live past his teens. (Just kidding!)
ReplyDeleteBut, one thing... that "I guess I'm done" part? Ain't happening. We're never done. And that's a good thing. :)
Happy weekend!
A gratidão é a memória do coração!
ReplyDeleteObrigada querida, pela sua amizade carinhosa, fico feliz
em saber que em algum lugar desse mundo você existe, e

I always loved your poetry....AND your photos of clouds! I see things/people, etc in clouds, too...and lots of other strange objects. I just saw one this morning, took a photo of it, and thought of you, of course! I'll post it on my blog as soon as I can. I miss blogging, but I just can't seem to get back into it!
